After my Walmart seller account was approved and my first products were live in WFS, the next step was ads. Walmart's own help pages make it sound like a ten-minute job: click Advertising in Seller Center, pick Sponsored Search, create an automatic campaign, set a budget, launch. That's how it's supposed to work, and I'll walk through that first. Then I'll cover what happened when it didn't work for me, because if you hit the same error, the fix isn't obvious.
How Walmart ads work for sellers
Walmart's advertising business is called Walmart Connect, and its ad platform is Ad Center. As a marketplace seller, the main product you'll use is Sponsored Products, part of what Walmart calls Sponsored Search. Your listing shows up in search results and on product pages, marked as sponsored, and you pay when a shopper clicks.
There are two campaign types:
- Automatic: Walmart picks the search terms and placements based on your listing content. This is the recommended starting point because you don't need keyword data yet.
- Manual: you choose keywords and bids. Better once you know which search terms actually convert.
Before advertising an item, make sure it's published, in stock, and winning the Buy Box. Ads won't serve on offers that aren't the featured one.
The normal setup
- In Seller Center, open Advertising from the left menu.
- Under Sponsored Search, click Start a campaign. This opens Walmart Connect Ad Center, logged in with your Seller Center credentials.
- Select your organization (your seller account) and create a Sponsored Products campaign with Automatic targeting.
- Name it, set a start date, and set an end date a few weeks out so a test can't run forever unnoticed.
- Set a daily budget. Walmart recommends high budgets to stay visible; you don't have to follow that for a test. Unspent budget can roll over, so watch actual spend, not just the cap.
- Choose a bidding approach. For a new item with no sales data, letting Walmart optimize for clicks is a reasonable start. Move to return-on-ad-spend targets once there's enough data.
- Add only the items you want to test, and launch.
Before launching, write down the break-even ROAS for each item. Walmart reports ROAS, not ACoS, so your limit is 1 รท your margin before ads. At a 30% margin, anything below 3.33x is losing money. The ROAS calculator gives you the number.
When Ad Center won't load: what happened to me
When I clicked Start a campaign, Ad Center opened and showed my partner account name at the top. But the Organization dropdown, where you pick the account to advertise from, showed "Something went wrong" with a Reload link. Reloading did nothing. Clicking Start a campaign again sent me right back to the same screen.
Here's what I tried, in order, so you can skip what didn't work:
- Reload in the dropdown. No change.
- Existing Organizations in Ad Center's sidebar. Empty.
- Launching from Seller Center instead of going to the Ad Center URL directly. Same loop.
- A different browser. Same error in Safari and Chrome, which ruled out cookies and cross-site tracking settings.
- Logging in to Walmart Advertising Help with my Seller Center login to open a ticket. That produced a more useful error: "Missing_Value: Could not find unique third-party identifier."
That second error was the clue. Walmart's ad system couldn't find an advertiser account linked to my seller account. Nothing I could do in a browser would create one.
How to open the support case
If your Seller Center login errors out on the help site, you can still open a case as a guest:
- Go to Walmart Advertising Help and choose Contact Support.
- Pick the Marketplace (3P) Seller option and choose Continue as Guest if the Seller Center login fails.
- Select Sponsored Search, then Account Access.
- Guest users can only pick a couple of issue types. Password or Other Login Issue fits, then Open a case via Email.
- Fill in your name, the email on your Seller Center account, your Advertiser Account Name (your business name as shown in Ad Center), your Walmart Seller ID (Seller Center, under Settings and Partner Profile), and Self-Serve as the demand channel.
- In the description, list both errors word for word, the browsers you tried, and ask them to "provision and link a Sponsored Search advertiser account to my seller account."
- Attach screenshots of both errors after the case is created.
A case number comes back right away by email, with a promise of a reply within 24 business hours.
What Walmart said
The first reply confirmed it: my seller account "is not onboarded yet" for advertising, and they'd update me when onboarding was complete. I replied asking whether they needed anything from me and for a timeline. A few days later I followed up again, and the case was escalated to Walmart's engineering team.
At the time of writing, it's still with engineering. I'll update this guide when it's resolved and the first campaign is running. In the meantime, a few things I've learned:
- It isn't something you broke. If the error shows up in two browsers, it's on Walmart's side.
- Reply on the same email thread when you follow up, so it stays attached to the case. Opening a new case starts over.
- Follow up on a schedule. About a week between nudges is reasonable. Ask a specific question each time.
- Use the waiting time. Your WFS items can still sell organically. Tightening up the title, images, and price now means the ads convert better once they're live.
- Marketing emails don't mean it's fixed. I got a "your key to higher sales" email from Walmart Connect while the case was open. The dropdown was still broken. Check Ad Center, not your inbox.
Questions people ask
How do Walmart marketplace sellers run ads?
Through Walmart Connect's Ad Center, which you reach from Seller Center under Advertising. Sponsored Products (part of Sponsored Search) puts your listings in Walmart search results and product pages on a cost-per-click basis.
Why does Walmart Ad Center say 'Something went wrong' in the Organization dropdown?
In my case it meant my seller account hadn't been onboarded to the advertising platform yet, so there was no advertiser account linked to my login. It isn't a browser problem if it happens in more than one browser. Walmart Advertiser Support has to provision and link the account.
What does 'Could not find unique third-party identifier' mean?
That error appeared when I tried to log in to Walmart Advertising Help with my Seller Center login. It points to the same root issue: Walmart's ad system can't find an advertiser account tied to your seller account. Open a support case as a guest and include your Seller ID.
What items can be advertised on Walmart?
Items generally need to be published, in stock, and winning the Buy Box. If your offer isn't the featured one on the item page, ads won't serve.
